Aposto que alguma vez na vida, você ouviu essa banda, sendo fã ou não. Pode ter sido em rádios, internet, televisão e até mesmo os amigos. E quem não conhece a música 19-2000? Com um refrão marcante, além de uma performasse eletrônica muito parecido com Rap e Hip Hop.
É curioso como as coisas acontecem... Ambos, Damon Albarn, e seu amigo, o desenhista Jamie Hewlett, estavam levando uma vida de farras, com festas que viravam a noite. Até que um dia, num rompante de criatividade, resolveram ocupar seu tempo ocioso fazendo algo de útil para o mundo.
Então, criaram o Gorillaz, uma banda virtual de Trip Rock que foi fundada em 1998 pelo então líder Damon Albarn e por Jamie Hewlett, co-criador da história em quadrinhos Tank Girl. A banda é composta por quatro membros animados: 2D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle eRussel. A música do grupo é resultado da colaboração entre vários outros músicos, sendo Damon Albarn o único membro permanente. Seu estilo musical normalmente é classificado como Rock Alternativo, embora haja muita influência do Britpop, Dub e da Eletrônica. Mesmo por ser uma banda virtual, seu primeiro álbum da banda, "Gorillaz", vendeu mais de 7 milhões de cópias e a banda entrou para o Guinness World Records como a Banda Virtual de Mais Sucesso.
O segundo álbum da banda, Demon Days, recebeu cinco vezes o certificado de platina no Reino Unido e dupla platina nos Estados Unidos. A banda recebeu cinco indicações para o Grammy Award em 2006, e venceu um deles na categoria "Melhor Colaboração Pop". Era uma ideia simples, enquanto Damon ficava rascunhando o que seriam as músicas de sua banda de mentira e batucando em uns tambores velhos para criar o que ele costumava chamar de "hip-hop puro, batidas de reggae e música latina". Jamie começou a desenhar o que seriam os integrantes da banda e ele garante que não se inspirou em ninguém. Mas o projeto foi além de meia dúzia de canções e um ou outro esboço. Damon reuniu alguns contatos e Jamie começou a preparar o site oficial da banda, que seria o principal meio de divulgação do grupo.
